En backpack au Maroc? Grimpe les 4167 mètres du Mont Toubkal sans expérience, sans guide, sans porteur, sans carte et sans te faire arnaquer!
Ne te laisse pas impressionner par son titre du plus haut mont de l’Afrique du Nord.
C’est une aventure deux ou trois jours de randonnée non technique qui demande seulement de la motivation. Idéal pour les amoureux de la montagne qui sont totalement débutants en alpinisme.
De Marrakech au village d’Imlil
À Marrakech, trouve les grands taxis près de Bab-er-Rob. Prends un taxi partagé jusqu’à Imlil et négocie le prix pour payer environ 40 MAD (5,50 $ CAD ou 3,60 €).
Le trajet dure une heure et demi jusqu’au joli village de montagne d’Imlil, à 1740 mètres. Pour t’acclimater et trouver l’équipement manquant, passe une nuit au village.
Tu pourras facilement louer des bottes de trekking, un sac de couchage et des gants, au besoin. La montée est possible toute l’année, mais l’hiver, de novembre à mars, il y a de la neige et de la glace à plus de 3000 mètres.
D’Imlil aux refuges
Départ le matin. Pas besoin d’acheter de cartes, elles sont dispendieuses et souvent inexactes. Il suffit de demander aux villageois la direction vers le Toubkal pour trouver son chemin.
Il y a également des points de peinture rouges sur certaines pierre; si tu vois des «X» rouges peints, ça veut dire qu’il ne faut pas aller dans cette direction. Il faut compter six heures de marche selon ta condition physique et ta facilité à t’acclimater à l’altitude.
En chemin, il y a quelques endroits pour manger et s’approvisionner en boissons. Il y aura également d’autres randonneurs accompagnés de guides.
Les refuges du Toubkal
À 3207 mètres d’altitude, il existe seulement deux refuges situés directement l’un à côté de l’autre.
Depuis 1938, le Club alpin français a ouvert un refuge qui accueille le public à prix très abordable (86 lits – la plupart dans des dortoirs avec des installations basiques).
L’autre hébergement se nomme Les Moufflons, un somptueux refuge privé, construit par un amoureux des montagnes et alpiniste professionnel natif d’Imlil. Il est nécessaire d’y passer une nuit.
Du refuge au sommet du Toubkal
Tôt le lendemain, dirige-toi vers la chute d’eau et suis le chemin en zigzag.
Encore une fois, pour te repérer, tu peux suivre les points rouges, les graffitis ou les petits Inukshuk laissés par d’autres randonneurs.
En hiver, c’est à ce moment que le vent glacial se fait sentir.
Le sommet
Les conditions climatiques changent rapidement en altitude dans les montagnes.
Avec de la chance, la visibilité te permettra d’avoir une superbe vue, sinon une belle tempête de neige peut également être au rendez-vous.
Peu importe, le sentiment d’accomplissement reste le même.
Le chemin du retour
Il suffit de redescendre jusqu’au refuge (idéalement avant midi), retourner sur le même chemin et arriver avant la tombée de la nuit au village d’Imlil.
De là, tu peux passer une autre nuit ou directement retourner à Marrakech.

Hamid Idbelaid & Atlas mountain tours nailed it for us. We were two women and two 10 yr old children. We went on a three day 2 night trek. Next time we would do 3 nights 4 days (as they actually recommended). The guide was brahim, the cook was Hamid and the muleteer Brahmin (sorry guys if I’ve spelt your names wrong). They made the experience from start to finish; they were professional, informative and totally committed to making our time work. This meant brilliant food, great local knowledge and insights, humour, patience. They were fantastic with the kids, funny and kind. It was tough the first day as unusually for the time of year it hailed, rained and snowed for the first day. We were walking for many hours (our choice) and it could have been pretty grim but they kept our spirits and speed up and we made it to the gite. They organised huge numbers of blankets, cooked great food and were flexible about the plans for the next days. The mountains were beautiful, the villages were fascinatinmg, the people were very friendly, but what made the trek were Brahim, Hamid. I spent three days with Rachid and couldn’t be happier with my experience in the Atlas Mountains. He got me safely to the summit of Mount Toubkal and we spent a further two days mountain biking and treking in the Atlas. He is a true gentleman who has grown up in the Atlas Mountains and knows his way around. Everyone seems to know him!! Be prepared to meet lots of people and shake lots of hands!!
He made me feel very welcome and arranged food and endless amounts of tea often with his friends and family. He is hilarious in all languages and I really felt lucky that he was my guide.
When I return to Morocco I will definitely visit my friend Rachid, if you travel to imlil I recommend that you look him up if you want an unforgettable time in the mountains. He’s an excellent guide and an amazing human being!! I miss my friend!!

Toubkal Ascent 2 Days Trek
A few days ago we hiked to the summit of Mt. Toubkal in two days. The surroundings are simply beautiful and we had an amazing time!
Since we are relatively inexperienced, our guide Hamid was very helpful and patient. Hamid and his team prepared wonderful meals and provided us with a good tent to spend the night.
For people who are inexperienced in multi-day hiking (just like us), we would recommend the Toubkal ascent in 3 days. We think this will make the hike more pleasant and balanced.
Overall, we would highly recommend Hamid from imlil-trekking.com and his team as your guide in the Atlas mountains.
